Objective

SAP Altiscale is looking for a Senior Site Reliability Engineer to help drive our data and platform strategy.

As a Senior Site Reliability Engineer you will be responsible for building and running SAP’s Big Data Services (BDS). BDS is a purpose-built cloud environment for running Hadoop, Spark and other big data tools for Enterprise customers. The ideal candidate for Senior Site Reliability Engineer is a technical generalist who tends toward solutions involving automation. Expectations and Tasks

  • Design, build, manage, maintain, and scale Altiscale’s core data center infrastructure.

  • Create software and processes to automate and improve the maintainability of our big data systems

  • Develop and deploy hybrid network systems in which cloud and bare-metal Hadoop clusters inter-operate

  • Maintain a highly available, reliable production service and participate in on-call rotation

Education and Qualifications

  • BA/BS in computer science and engineering (or equivalent experience)

  • 5 years of operations experience with a service provider or large enterprise.

  • Experience developing production Linux systems, networking, and complex distributed software systems. Strong systems design and analytical skills are a must.

  • Experience writing software to manage large fleets of hardware or to manage distributed software systems.

  • Experience deploying infrastructure with configuration management tools, especially Chef. Example technologies include Chef, Puppet, Salt.

  • Experience writing software for enterprise/carrier-class routers and switches, deploying and operating a large enterprise or cloud network

  • Experience designing, deploying and maintaining large production big data clusters. Example technologies include Hadoop, Kafka, Zookeeper, Hive, HBase, Spark

  • Experience deploying infrastructure components. Example technologies include Sensu, BIND, ISC-DHCP, Graphite, Cobbler, rsyslog, logstash

  • Proficient in Unix/Linux tools and systems

  • Strong system programing skills (shell, go, Ruby, Python, Chef, etc.)

  • Strong experience developing and configuring complex network and distributed systems environment

  • Experience automating the testing and troubleshooting of distributed systems

  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Ability to write proposals and papers related to field of expertise. Ability to make presentations to professional peers and work closely with management.

  • Experience managing container based services in production using tools such as Docker, Kubernetes or Mesos a plus

  • Must be able to work onsite in Palo Alto, CA

  • This role is not able to support an international transfer
