VMware Sr Member Technical Staff - Cloud Operations in Palo Alto, California

Our team supports the Wavefront service and you will play a key role in building and operating the world's best real-time data collection and visualization system. We also work closely with developers to provide them with systems that increase their productivity. As an Operations Engineer / Architect, you will be provide technical leadership, drive innovation, and apply industry best standards and patterns to solve complex cloud problems. You are passionate about working on technologies and design approaches that are disruptive to incumbent players, using tooling & automation, and Agile concepts.

  • You'll be our AWS cloud engineering expert, helping us define our cloud standards

  • You will have a passion for learning and adopting new technologies with a focus on finding the right tool for the job

  • You will have a deep expertise with Linux and posses the ability to tune Linux to suit the application needs and requirements

  • Design new tools and smart alerts that help quickly discover failures/issues and work with engineers to identify root cause and fix issues

  • Perform code reviews, evaluate implementations and provide feedback about potential tool improvements

  • Develop tools to improve our ability to rapidly deploy and effectively monitor production applications at scale.

  • Develop software to help drive opportunities to improve automation for deployment, management, tooling and visibility within the engineering team

  • Develop a deep understanding of the various services and applications that come together to deliver Wavefront's services

  • You will take part in the on-call rotation for these and other critical systems. You will be driven to make on-call one of the best parts of the job.

  • Demonstrated experience in adoption of cloud infrastructure platforms like AWS, GCE and Azure.

  • Strong coding skills with a passion foe writing clean, well tested and maintainable code

  • You possess experience with at least one cross-platform configuration management and/or orchestration tool such as Ansible, Salt, Chef, Packer and Terraform

  • You have experience deploying and maintaining production services using container technology such as Docker and Kubernetes

  • You write intermediate-level or better Python programs, taking advantage of third party modules and arranging your code into reusable functions checked by unit tests

  • You demonstrate knowledge of cloud architecture security, scaling, and management principles and have experience working with AWS cloud infrastructure (or GCE/Azure)

  • You possess the ability to work individually and collaboratively with others to solve issues quickly and effectively

  • A deep and abiding love of Linux. Or a respectful hatred for it. Either way, you'll need to be able to sed/awk/grep like a pro.

  • Strong experience with large scale Infrastructure, distributed systems, and application performance

  • You thrive in open environments that encourage education, cooperation, and teamwork

Any of the following would be additionally beneficial:

  • Ability to analyze and optimize performance in high-traffic Internet applications

  • Experience with a standard web application stack or framework such as LAMP or Java

  • Experience with release engineering practices and continuous integration systems such as Jenkins, TravisCI or Bamboo

  • Experience implementing Infrastructure as Code using Test Driven Design
