VMware Staff Engineer, Cloud Services in Palo Alto, California

The Staff Engineer with the Software Defined Datacenter team works closely with talented software engineers in defining the next generation platform for the software defined datacenter. As a member of this team you will be responsible for the design, architecture, development, and operation of a customer-facing service enabling VMware virtualization in the cloud.

Responsibilities:

  • As part of a team of engineers, design, develop, maintain, and operate a scalable service control plane, and dependent components including a highly-available persistence layer and messaging bus.

  • Engage with and drive a high-visibility DevOps process including continuous integration and continuous deployment with zero-downtime upgrades.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional VMware project teams including VMware consultants, engineers, product management, and support staff.

  • Understand overall network virtualization platform architecture and design best of class solutions that fit the product.

Requirements:

  • Knowledge of modern software development methodologies, with emphasis on high-availability services at scale.

  • Ability to work independently and work collaboratively in a team environment, including quickly getting up to speed with new technologies.

  • Proficient organizational skills with the ability to manage competing demands.

  • A Computer Science degree or demonstrated equivalent experience.

  • Strong systems level programming experience

Preferred:

  • Experience in Java 8 coding, algorithms and data structures.

  • Experience running a service at a commercial scale.

  • Practical working knowledge of Spring, Jenkins, DC/OS or Kubernetes, and Amazon Web Services.

  • Strong familiarity with functional test frameworks and techniques.
