About the Position

The Transfer Admissions Specialist/Recruiter is responsible for advising and counseling all prospective, new, and continuing students attempting to complete Title 5, CSU and University undergraduate admissions and degree requirements; conducts undergraduate admission evaluations and assessments; and actively collaborates with other university staff involved in various aspects of admissions and records processing, to ensure that related processes are completed in a timely manner. The objective in all interactions is to provide customer service and information regarding policies and procedures; to suggest actions that will resolve issues; and to establish cordial and collegial relationships with contacts in the undergraduate admissions unit. The primary responsibility of the Transfer Admissions Counselor/Recruiter is to represent San Jose State University to prospective students, parents, community college counselors. Working under limited supervision, the position is responsible for maintaining a high level of knowledge regarding CSU admissions policies, with special emphasis on transfer students and non-resident/international policies, procedures, and advising practices. As a representative for San Jose State University, this position maintains a high level of expertise in undergraduate transfer and freshmen admission requirements, processes, and regulations to facilitate quality customer service to ensure enrollment at SJSU.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provides routine advice and counsel to prospective students and their families on general CSU and SJSU specific admissions requirements and other transitional programs including the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), Associate Degree for Transfers (ADT; SB1440).

  • Conducts domestic international advising and recruitment to prospective students.

  • Conducts in-depth interviews to assess students┬┐ needs, goals, major choices, and preparedness for university level work.

  • Creates and presents information on CSU application, admissions and Next Steps to Transfer students, Counselors and organizations to ensure proper compliance.

  • Advises students who are eligible for special programs and services such as EOP, AB540, and Transfer Admission for students who have ADTs on the process of acceptance to each of these programs.

  • Coordinates pre-approved recruitment activities off-campus to develop and maintain collaborative programs involving community college students, faculty, and staff.

  • Coordinates, plans, organizes, and participates in various visitations programs to community colleges to attract upper-division transfer and non-traditional students.

  • Participates in designing and conducting SJSU admissions presentations and various workshops such as the CSU Mentor workshops, as needed or requested by the manager. Provides workshops, one-to-one meetings, and phone and e-mail communications to advise applicants on requirements.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related and three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's level degree in higher education or similar field

  • 1 to 2 years of program implementation and coordination in higher education

  • 1 to 2 years of presentation experience

  • Knowledge of technical databases and programs for word documents, databases, communication tools, spreadsheets, etc.

  • Ability to develop and lead presentations and workshops.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to handle sensitive communications with students, parents, employees and external agencies.

  • Ability to take initiative and is resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.

  • Ability to collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data.

  • Ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required.

  • Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports.

  • Knowledge of technology and software applications such as: word processing, spreadsheet, database management, and communication tools.

  • Ability to handle multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects.

  • Ability to identify conflict, problem solve, and resolve student problems and concerns in the most efficient manner possible.

  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement small and large scale events to promote a welcoming and inclusive environment for nonresident students.
