You’re deeply motivated Architect and expected to deliver and lead through others, as well as personally working to reach innovative solutions to business problems You love to hack the kernel and customize it for his/her need. You're super thrilled to be the one responsible for power-on and bringing life to the most advanced networking system in the world. You would not hesitate to roll-up sleeves and probe hardware in the lab when required.

  • You’ll drive a collaborative process with partners and fellow architects to collect business and technical requirements to then fully articulate the solutions architecture of the platform

  • Identify, deliver, and document the required artifacts to make the new capabilities generally available, including strategy collateral, roadmaps, position statements, policies, standards, concepts, and logical specifications

  • After the initial architecture phase, the architect would actively continue monitoring and consulting throughout the execution phases, including design, engineering, implementation, and operations, feeding implementation and operational challenges back into architectural opportunities

  • Influence strategic decision makers, engage with a broad set of partners and domain experts across multiple disciplines, establish relationships, and communicate strategy, architecture and technology to the broader internal community

Role & Responsibilities

Key job responsibilities include:

  • Design and development of Linux kernel modules and device drivers.

  • Drive the bringup of new hardware.

  • Drive architecture and design discussions.

  • Build toolchains, customize kernel config/boot/packaging for target.

  • Develop and test device drivers, automation tools and diags for network devices.

  • Evaluate cutting edge Linux kernel technologies for Cisco's embedded systems.

Participate on a project team of engineers involved in the development of software for our next generation Service Provider product family, with emphasis in routing protocol infrastructure.

Who You Are

Minimum Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in Architecture on Linux kernel development, debugging and optimization.

  • Expertise in Linux kernel internals for DMA/IO management, interrupts and bus architectures like PCIe, i2C.

  • Prior experience in board bring up and device driver development.

  • BS/MS degree in CS/EE/CE of technical equivalent.

Desired Skills

  • Ability to cross compile the Linux kernel for multiple platforms.

  • Experience with Linux virtualization technologies like KVM, LXC, Dockers.

  • Experience analyzing performance bottlenecks at the kernel/driver level.

  • You should be able to own large portions of the software from a technical perspective

  • You'll handle multiple tasks at once and work independently with minimal managerial mentorship.

  • You've strong team building skills. This role requires the ability to work across departments and with other teams

  • Be open to continuous learning and committed to ongoing self-improvement.

  • Initiate and participate in interpersonal efforts to improve overall group productivity and test effectiveness. You'll contribute to overall test strategies

  • Self-motivated, strong sense of ownership, good teammate
